Glasgow is the largest, and most lively, city in Scotland with superb opportunities for shopping and an incredible night scene. For the more bohemian tourist there are countless places to sit and relax in the West End of Glasgow which has boutiques, cafés, tea rooms, bars, restaurants and clubs as well as some excellent bed and breakfast in Glasgow. In the following article I will describe three tourist attractions in Glasgow which should be especially interesting to those of you who enjoy all things artistic; the House For An Art Lover, the Burrell Collection and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum:
The Burrell Collection
In 1944, The Burrel Collection was gifted to the city of Glasgow by Sir william and Lady Burrell and the collection can be seen at Pollok Country Park in the south of Glasgow This beautiful collection of art works includes more than nine thousand items. The collection is very diverse containing some modern sculptures as well as an Islamic art collection. You will find paintings by the likes of Cezanne, Degas and other European artists. As well as sculptures and paintings one is able to enjoy the stunning collection of tapestries, alabasters, stained glass and English furniture. On top of all this, the Burrell Collection also has an incredibly important selection of medieval art and collections from ancient Egypt and China.
The House For An Art Lover
The House For An Art Lover is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Glasgow. This incredible Art Nouveau house was designed, originally, by Glasgow’s most famous architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh who was aided by his talented wife, Margaret Macdonald.
Actually the design was an entry for a 1901 competition to make a design for a ‘House for an Art Lover’, however, the Mackintoshs’ entry was disqualified because it was submitted too late. Fortunately, more than one hundred years later the house is located in Bellahouston Park due to the efforts and hard work of the architect Professor Andy Macmillan and the engineer Graham Roxburgh. Construction started in nineteen eighty nine, ceased for a short amount of time but started again in 1994 thanks to a collaboration between the Glasgow School of Art and the Glasgow City Council.
The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum
One of Glasgow and Scotland’s premier museums and art galleries, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery is home to one of Europe’s great civic art collections, but also it has been voted one of the most popular free tourist attractions in Scotland.
You will discover Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on Argyle Street, in the West End of Glasgow, on the banks of the River Kelvin. The gallery was constructed using the traditional Glaswegian material of red sandstone in a Spanish Baroque style. The building was designed by Sir John W. Simpson and E.J. Milner Allen and first opened its doors in nineteen hundred and one. The collections in the museum were originally from the old Kelvingrove House Museum and the McLellan Galleries.
