The capital city of England and the U.K., London, has a large choice of highly interesting visitor attractions, ranging from the amazingly ancient to the very new. Most of the attractions are famous all across the world (for instance, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament). Among the most recently added are the Millenium Dome, Millennium Bridge, London Aquarium and the London Eye.

The Merlin Entertainments London Eye (it’s proper name), is more usually referred to as, simply, the London Eye or,from time to time, the Millenium Wheel (due to the fact that it was constructed for the Millenium celebrations). The Merlin Entertainments London Eye was opened officially by the then U.K. P.M., Mr. Tony Blair, on the evening of December thirty first unfortunately there were safety problems which led to it not opening to the public until March 2000. When it was erected it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world having a height of one hundred and thirty five metres.

The huge wheel can’t be missed on the South Bank in Jubilee Gardens peering over to the Houses of Parliament below. From within one of the 32 pods towering over London you can see a great many famous London Landmarks, the already mentioned Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s, Westminster Abbey and Hampton Court Palace are just a handful, what an amazingly unique way to see most of London and, the most likely, the reason it is one of the most popular paid for visitor attraction in London.

The first flight on the London Eye is at 10 am however the ticket office opens at half past nine in the morning.  The Eye closes at half past nine at night between July and August, eight ‘o clock at night between April and October and at 9 ‘o clock at night for the other months of the year.

The easiest way to travel to the London Eye is via the underground rail, just get off at one of the following tube stations; Charing Cross, Embankment, Westminster, or the most convenient Waterloo. You can also travel by boat, get off at Waterloo Millennium Pier.
