The university town of Cambridge is widely known all over the earth for being the home of the University of Cambridge, one of the most prestigious centres of learning in Britain. The University includes thirty one colleges including; St John’s College, Selwyn College, Sidney Sussex College and Trinity College which have a major impact upon the city. Although a large number of folk arrive at Cambridge to visit the University, Cambridge has many more attractions well worth a visit besides the University. Cambridge dates back to the medieval period and as such there there are numerous of exquisite architecture. One can wander amongst the medieval streets, relax one of the various gardens or parks or you may go punting along the river. If if a few hours punting sounds great, then one should rent a punt or alternatively one can hire a chauffeured punt. There are various firms offering this service along the river. Otherwise a cruise up and down the river in a narrow boat.
Cambridge is also known for its churches, with 13 of them being within the city boundaries. Of the 13 churches found in the centre of Cambridge it is All Saints Church which is generally accepted as one of the finest examples of English Gothic revival architecture. A further extremely noteworthy church is Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of only four circular Norman churches located in the country. The tiniest of Cambridge’s churches is St Peter’s, which hides in a quiet part of the town. Possibly the finest panoramas across Cambridge and University colleges can be experienced from the site of the Great St Mary’s Church, the University church.
Because there is a vast selection of visitor attractions to see in Cambridge, it would be nearly impossible to visit them all in just 24 hours. We therefore advise that you spend a minimum of forty eight hours in Cambridge. If you and your family are in the process of considering taking a vacation in Cambridge it is vital that you reserve your lodgings as early as possible because, sadly hotels and guest houses in Cambridge tend to be amazingly busy and are frequently fully booked for weeks or even months in advance. If you have a large family you may find that apartments in Cambridge are a reasonable alternative.
