Arguably, Lanzarote´s most famous talking point is its 300 plus volcanoes. Which were created by seismic activity during the 18th century that went on for over six years. As a result the interior of the island today looks like the moon – with lots of lava fields and spent peaks. With little in the way of flora and fauna able to grow or survive here. So it comes as something of a surprise to discover that this arid island can sustain its own wood.
Lanzarote’s wood is called El Bosque and which can be found in the north of the island. Although it is very difficult to track down as it isn’t marked on many local maps and signposts are non existent. So ensuring that this remains a spot largely reserved for the use of the locals who love to come up here at weekends on holidays for BBQ´s and social gatherings. The wood is situated very close to Lanzarote´s only other green zone, the Valley of 1000 Palms. Which is a truly breathtaking sight as the crowns of thousands of Canarian palms sway in the breeze here – resembling an African oasis. The village of Haria is located on the valley floor and locals plant a palm tree for very baby born here. A tradition that is said to date back many centuries.
