Dundee has been the site of a settlement for as far back as the time of the Picts. The city of Dundee, the fourth largest city to be found in the nation of Scotland, has had a long association with trade and commerce. The three primary trades, in Dundee, were “journalism, jam and jute”. Although the city of Dundee could be described as city which is post-industrial it has something of a mixed economy and it has a large percentage of its population employed in the manufacturing industry (compared to the rest of the country), approximately thirteen and a half percent. In recent years the tourism trade has begun to become a rather important part of the Dundee economy and there are a growing number of guest houses providing Dundee bed and breakfast accommodation and in the following article I discuss the reader to 3 Dundee attractions; Discover Point Visitor Centre, Verdant Works and Sensation Science Centre:
The Discover Point Visitor Centre
Discovery Point is a incredibly interesting and award-winning Dundee visitor attraction which explains the events of one of the most adventurous voyages of exploration ever, the story of the world famous Antarctic explorer, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, and his first ship, the RRS Discovery. On March 21st, 1901, the Discovery was launched at the Panmure Shipyard, Dundee. Captain Scott and his crew set sail for Antarctica on August the 6th 1901, reaching there in January nineteen hundred and two. The RRS Discovery is the most prestigious part of the visitor centre having been fully renovated outside and in. Narrow passageways and steep stairs can make it difficult for those with mobility issues, luckily, visitors will find that there is an audio visual presentation on the dockside.
The Sensation Science Centre
If you are looking for a tourist attraction which will provide family entertainment, then Dundee’s Sensation Science Centre is the perfect solution. Sensation Dundee is the only science centre in the UK that is based upon the five senses of the body. Visitors can discover the wonders of sciences through the senses with in excess of eighty interactive exhibits. You will also discover live science shows and on the spot demonstrations, which show how everyday ingredients found in the home can be used to to create fascinating effects. Visitors interested in surgery can have a go at trying keyhole surgery. Sensation brings science to life in dozens of incredibly interesting ways.
Verdant Works
Verdant Works was, at one time, a working jute mill. At it’s height, during the mid to late nineteenth century, the Dundee jute industry had a workforce of about 50 thousand workers in more than sixty factories scattered across the city. Nowadays, Verdant Works brings this industry to life, by utilising a wide range of displays which include, interactive computers, film shows and original machinery. This remarkable museum was once home to three enormous steam engines running seventy looms and two thousand eight hundred spindles. There was also a workforce of some five hundred people, spinning and preparing jute then weaving it in a different factory across the road. Renovation of the building commenced in 1992 and it opened its doors to the public for the very first time on September the sixteenth, nineteen ninety six.
