Bathing on the beach for the whole of my summer vacation has never really been the type of thing I would do. Don’t get me wrong, at times I really do enjoy relaxing on a sunny beach, however, I also like to visit other places on my vacation. I love to soak in the atmosphere, which is often unique, I like to sample the local food and culture. In truth each year I enjoy visiting new places and I go to great lengths trying to discover something totally unique. This is more than likely why I so thoroughly enjoy visits to the Hebrides island known as the Isle of Harris and why I regularly decide to hire self catering cottages on Harris.
Harris is a little island situated off the west of Scotland. The Isle of Harris is only one of 100′s of little isles widely known as the Outer Hebrides, although to be strictly correct the UK postal address is the Western Isles. Accepted as either the Outer Hebrides or the Western Isles the islands are incredibly beautiful and interestingly unique. For those tourists who simple can’t do without a beach with golden sand Harris has a multitude to choose from and virtually all are spectacular and frequently deserted. It sometimes seems ’round bend in the road you are met by an awesome sight. The Harris roads are drastically different to those experienced on the mainland of Scotland in more remote areas single track road is still common and you will have to know how to use passing places to safely let oncoming traffic past and also let traffic from behind to pass too. All you need do is pull over to the left. If you are faced with a large and cumbersome vehicle wishing to pass and the passing place is on your right you can carefully pull over into to it to allow the big vehicle pass easily but be careful not to end up off the road too much.
One of the primary reasons folk visit the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the islands landscape and culture. The culture of the Isle of Harris has, over 100′s of years been powerfully influenced by the Celtic, Norse, Scottish and English races. Today the majority of folk speak in the Gaelic language and though some speak English, it is commonly their second language. The people of the Isle of Harris are amongst the friendliest on our planet and the hospitality is extremely well known. The people of the Isle of Harris are justifiably proud of the awesome beauty of the island and go to great lengths to keep the island tidy so it is incredibly important not to leave litter.
Dotted along the west coast of the Isle of Harris are to be found some of the most breath takingly beautiful beaches in the whole of Scotland, and it could be said the whole of Britain. You will, most probably, notice how crystal clear the waters are and it is a fact that the beaches on Harris are incredibly clean. Sadly there is no way to avoid debris washing up from Atlantic shipping but happily there isn’t alot.
