Like the world’s fanciest hotels, the ski resorts of the Tarentaise Valley in France are synonymous with luxury and style for winter recreation. Some may remember its slopes from the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics. One thing is for sure, those who have experienced the good life in this Savoy locale know how hard it is to leave.
If you were hoping to travel by air, the closet airport is roughly three hours away. The remote location between the French Alps makes it a bit harder to get to, but the best idea by far is to take the Eurostar from Paris. This world famous train also goes to London and Brussels, but here it drops you off right at the town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice in the heart of the action.
Once you get passed the breathtaking views this area has to offer, you can introduce yourself to a sea of slopes. LaPlagne and Escape Killy offer 400 km combined. The spectrum of hills is incredible. They range from the world’s most difficult black diamond runs to placid cross-country inclines.
If you are nervous about skiing, there are private and public lessons available just about everywhere you go. Just step outside, put on your giro ski helmet and pick what suits you.
Beyond the abundant skiing, there is still plenty to do after the sun dips past the mountain peaks. The towns of Albertville, Aime and Mo’tiers are all located in the valley and offer many restaurants, nightclubs and bars for those seeking an evening out. So, after an adventurous day, you can slip into your leather brown boots and trot into town for a drink. With other skiers having the same thing in mind, there will be plenty of chances to mingle.
After a few days, visitors will often need a day off. A suggestion for spending this day of rest is to put your feet up by the fire and lose yourself in a novel. This area has been an inspiration to many writers and lends itself quite well to reading. Nothing recharges the batteries like a relaxing day with one of your favorite suspense books.
So, when you think about it, the choice of where to go for your winter recreation is obvious. The Tarentaise Valley has the most beautiful scenery and the best night life and is arguably the most artistically inspiring of all the ski communities in the world. Those reasons are enough to draw anyone to this spot, skiers or non-skiers. The only downside to visiting is that you may never want to leave.
