Scotland, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain, is a fantastic destination to take a vacation with a helpful choice of tourist attractions including some of the most highly interesting galleries and museums in the UK, ideal countryside for hill-walkers, ramblers, mountain climbers, hikers and others of that ilk as well as a huge selection of country homes, fortified houses, castles and historical buildings. In the following article I discuss the island of Arran and explain why this is such a fantastic place in which to take a vacation.
The Isle of Arran is the 7th largest island in the country of Scotland and although the island is commonly said to be one of the islands of the Hebrides it is in fact in the Firth of Clyde further south. Because tourism is the main industry on the island it will not surprise you to discover that there is an incredible number of hotels on the Isle of Arran. Even though most folk take vacations on the island in order to enjoy the awesome countryside the island also features a respectable number of attractions including; Kildonan Castle, Arran Heritage Museum, Brodick Castle and Arran Transport Museum.
There are a number of population centres, the biggest is Brodick, where you will find the ferry terminal with ferries running to Ardrossan on the mainland. Lamlash, situated 4 miles south of Brodick, is the site where you can grab a boat to Holy Island.
Lochranza is biggest settlement in the northern region of the island and will find the site of the ferry terminal with ferries running to Claonaig on the Scottish mainland. Please note that the ferry only sails in the summer months. Lochranza is situated in a large, and pretty, bay with the ruined Lochranza Castle being the highlight.
Blackwaterfoot is the biggest village on the west coast of the Isle of Arran. The village has a public house (bar), a tiny harbour and a garage with a petrol station. Other villages to visit include; Kilmory (south coast), Corrie (north of Brodick), Whiting Bay (south of Brodick), Catacol (in the north) and last but not least Pirnmill which has the finest beach on Arran.
