Canterbury is an ancient settlement in Kent located along the River Stour’s banks. This intensely beautiful city is the ecclesiastical capital of the country and this has been the case for a great many years. as a result of this the city is home to a large number of prestigious religious structures, the greatest of which is Canterbury Cathedral.
Canterbury Cathedral is most well-known for the murder site of Thomas a Becket but the structure was founded in A.D. 597 and has an eventful and long past. Following the death of Becket many miracles occurred and a shrine was built which very quickly became a place of pilgrimage. Unfortunately it is no longer possible to visit the shrine as King Henry VIII had it destroyed however the cathedral remains a place of pilgrimage for large numbers of folk.
The town’s most visited museum is The Canterbury Tales. The museum re-creates, through the use of medieval tableaux, the pilgrimages made during the times of Chaucer. Chaucer wrote the immensely popular Canterbury Tales which tells the story of five pilgrimages. Audiovisual aids are used to bring the characters to life over forty five minutes.
The Museum of Canterbury (previously called The Canterbury Heritage Museum) is a further well attended museum. Situated within the ancient Poor Priest’s Hospital this fantastic museum displays the town’s history. With the use of state-of-the-art technology, which also includes holographic imagery, the museum covers periods from the Vikings to the Blitz.
The Canterbury Roman Museum is a strange museum for the fact that it is below street level. Utilising actual archaeological excavations the museum brings to life the Roman era through interactive computers. This is a chance to see up close mosaics in a Roman house.
Of course the town has numerous other visitor attractions, far too many to discuss here. The town’s nightlife would merit another article.
