Vacations in Britain appear to be immensely popular this year, most probably due to the economic downturn and the weak pound. England has a large number of top class tourist destinations including London (the capital city of England) and other interesting cities plus a collection of seaside resorts such as; Blackpool, Southport, Skegness and Bognor Regis. One town commonly overlooked is Plymouth in the south of England.
At first glance Plymouth appears rather bland and primarily modern, but investigating a bit deeper and you will very quickly find that Plymouth has a rich history and a deep relationship with the sea. As long ago as the sixteenth century the town has had a busy port. In fifteen eighty eight Francis Drake embarked from the port to successfully defend the English by defeating the Spanish Armada. A further historic moment occurred in 1620 when the port served as the last embarkation point for the Pilgrim Fathers on their journey to North America.
It is possible to have inexpensive weekend city breaks in Plymouth by making a reservation in bed and breakfast in Plymouth rather than making a reservation in a posh hotel. A quick search on Yahoo will reveal that it is possible to book a room for a little as £29 a night and many guest houses offer reasonably priced dinners also, often equivalent to, or less costly than local restaurants.
Things To See And Do In Plymouth
There are a great many places in Plymouth that are well worth visiting. Popular visitor attractions include; Merchant’s House Museum, the Elizabethan House, the National Marine Aquarium and the Barbican district. A trip on a boat around the naval base is a superb way to spend some time but if you find that you have more time why not take a day out to places close by Plymouth, for example; Buckland Abbey, Mount Edgcumbe or Saltram House.
Saltram House is a lovely Tudor Mansion which is situated two miles east of Plymouth, Mount Edgcumbe is another Tudor house with coastal paths, landscaped gardens and parklands, and Buckland Abbey, around six miles in distance from Plymouth, is a Cistercian abbey which was once owned by Sir Francis Drake and was later redesigned as a family home.
If you are in the process of considering taking a vacation in the city of Plymouth it is vital that you reserve your room at your first opportunity because, sadly hotel and guest house accommodation in Plymouth tend to be alarmingly busy and are often fully booked for a long period in advance. If your group is large you may find that Plymouth serviced apartments are a reasonable option to bed and breakfast accommodation in Plymouth. If you are visiting Great Britain from overseas then why not consider booking a room for a few days in hotels in London to take in the attractions of the nations capital also.
